About this site
Gunkan no Kakurene (軍艦の隠れ根) is a boat-dive site on the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido, sixteen minutes from Horomui harbour, with a maximum depth of 28 m and an average around 15 m. The top of the reef is at 1.5 m and drops straight to the deep bottom, with five hidden pinnacles in the area. Strong current; intermediate to advanced. Sea ravens, atka mackerel and giant Pacific octopus arrive from late October, when feeding atka mackerel form dense columns from 15 m to near the surface, and lumpfish, snailfish and Steller sea lions follow from mid-November.
