Cayuga

This sturdy steel freighter has the dubious distinction of being a rare steel vessel to be sunk by a wooden ship, after colliding with the Joseph Hurd just south of Gray's Reef Passage. The Hurd was towed to safety with a badly-damaged bow, and a major salvage effort was made to raise the Cayuga. Chains were slung under the hull, and a number of pontoons attached in order to lift her. One the first attempt, she was well off the bottom when a forward chain snapped, and the boat fell back to bottom and broke her hull. Further work was futile. The stern of the wreck is intact, with several large pontoons still attached on either side, and the bow of the vessel largely collapsed and broken up. A wooden work barge sits on the bottom off the port side. Lies in about 30.5 m; sank 1895.
