About this site
Koura (小浦) is a dive site on the volcanic island of Iojima, dived from Makurazaki in Kagoshima Prefecture, with a maximum depth of about 18 to 25 m and an average around 12 to 15 m, suitable from beginner level. On a gently sloping rock shelf with soft coral and hard coral, a rock at 20 m is surrounded by golden sweepers and close to 30 lionfish, giving the spot its local nickname of the lionfish palace, with leaf scorpionfish, dragonets and blennies among them. Elsewhere the island's black rock and black sand form a monochrome seascape with sergeant majors and anthias around the large rocks, painted spiny lobster in the cracks and juvenile razorfish on the sand.
