About this site
Isso (一湊) is the main dive area on Yakushima in Kagoshima Prefecture, reached by a 3-minute boat ride from the harbour, with a maximum depth of 25 m and an average of around 15 m. It is divided into several points: Tank-shita, Gyosho (fish reef), Zero-sen and Omiya-shita, over white sand and rock with no current, and the range of species is close to everything found around the island. Highlights include pygmy seahorses, ribbon eels, jawfish and fire dartfish at Tank-shita; tomato grouper, glassfish, anthias and cleaner shrimps at Zero-sen; batfish, juvenile emperor angelfish and amberjack at the fish reef; and schools of bluestripe snapper, anthias and spawning cuttlefish in spring at Omiya-shita. Shore entry is possible but boat is the usual choice; suitable from beginner level.
