About this site
Mugio (麦生) is a shore-entry reef on the east side of Yakushima in Kagoshima Prefecture, with a maximum depth of 15 m and an average of around 10 m. The shallows are rich enough in coral to serve as a fixed coral monitoring station, and large rocks stand offshore with life in every shadow, including boxer crabs and various angelfish. Little current; suitable from beginner level. Shore entry only, and currently closed for seawall construction.
