About this site
Benkei (ローソク岩の弁慶) is a boat-dive site beside the Rosoku-iwa sea stack off Yoichi on the Shakotan coast of Hokkaido, about five minutes from Yunai fishing harbour, with a maximum depth of 24 m and an average around 13 m. The water is about 13 m under the boat, where a single huge boulder stands, giving the site its name; boulders and rock surround the stack and give way to sand further out. Intermediate level. Large rockfish, fat greenling, striped beakfish, red sea bream, anglerfish, flatfish, sculpins, atka mackerel and giant Pacific octopus are typical.
