About this site
Umanose (ローソク岩の馬の背) is a boat-dive site beside the Rosoku-iwa sea stack off Yoichi on the Shakotan coast of Hokkaido, about five minutes from Yunai fishing harbour, with a maximum depth of 27 m and an average around 15 m. The water is about 16 m under the boat, and a large reef rises gently from the seabed toward the base of the rock like a horse's back, surrounded by boulders and narrow channels. Current can pick up at times because the site lies offshore with good tidal flow; advanced divers only. Anglerfish, octopus, red sea bream, flatfish, gurnards, striped beakfish and atka mackerel are seen on the deep sand in season, with pipefish and hermit crabs for macro.
